LOCAL PHILANTHROPY
Alpha Delta Pi is committed to community service, as well as giving of time and money to benefit those in need. The Epsilon Kappa chapter is very proud of our accomplishments with Alpha Delta Pi’s national philanthropy, the Ronald McDonald House. In addition to collecting ‘pop tops’, we also hold two major philanthropic events during the year.
In October 2006, our Lions Share Challenge was a Fall Carnival for the local community, both young and old! The day began with a Pumpkin Carving Contest in the Amphitheater. Many individuals crafted fine pumpkins to be sold at the carnival later in the day. At the carnival, booths included face painting, cupcake walk, moonwalk, and can throw. Costumes were judged as the band played on Tailgate Terrace. The two most popular events of the night were the “Pie and ADPi” and the Hamburger Eating Contest! Mark your calendars now for the Second Annual Lions Share Carnival which will be held on October25, 2007.
The Spring brought Lady Luck to Troy with a Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament, held in the beautiful Stadium Club of Movie Gallery Stadium. Many participants tried their hand at this popular activity to win the grand prize, a deluxe poker table of their very own! Those that weren’t so lucky that night were treated to a band and food. Practice your poker face and look for this event to be bigger and better in 2008!
Through these events, Epsilon Kappa raised nearly $4000 for the Ronald McDonald House and the Alpha Delta Pi Foundation, Inc. The Ronald McDonald House in Mobile welcomed the donation and support provided through our philanthropic spirit.
Look for these events in the upcoming year, as well as our new project to raise awareness of issues related to women’s heart health in cooperation with the American Heart Association’s “Go Red for Women” Campaign.
The sisters of Epsilon Kappa also take regular road trips to the Ronald McDonald house in Mobile, which specializes in benefiting the families of premature babies. Once there, we cook dinner, clean the house, and spend some time with the resident families. Christmastime is the favorite time of most because we like to help decorate the house and bring presents. Last year we even put up their Christmas tree!
This fall we will be hand delivering our Philanthropy Day Recruitment activity to the Ronald McDonald House. We made cute little bags of homemade cocoa wrapped in colorful fabric squares, complete with hand made well wishes from the women attending the Recruitment Events.
The sisters of Epsilon Kappa are very excited about all that we plan to do for the House that Love Built this year. Philanthropy is something that we take very seriously. We are looking forward to doing all that we can to help make the lives of others a little easier and more enjoyable.
The Ronald McDonald House of Mobile welcomed its first family on February 28, 2000. The Ronald McDonald House of Mobile is a temporary home-away-from-home for families from outside the area who have a child being treated at a local hospital. During their time of medical uncertainty, it is so refreshing for families to be able to look forward to a home cooked meal at the end of a long day at the hospital. This is where we can use your help. Our goal is to allow caring community groups an opportunity to cook and possibly serve delicious meals to our families as often as possible.
NATIONAL PHILANTHROPY
Alpha Delta Pi collegians and alumnae, as well as friends and family of members of Alpha Delta Pi, show their philanthropic spirit in many ways. Chapters, alumnae associations and outstanding volunteers are recognized at Grand Convention for their philanthropic achievements.
Commitment to the Alpha Delta Pi international philanthropy, the Ronald McDonald House Charities, was made in 1979 and continues today. Since beginning its association, Alpha Delta Pi has contributed over $2 million to this worthwhile effort. Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) supports Ronald McDonald Houses in local communities, as well as funding grants to other not-for-profit organizations whose programs focus on children in need. There are 195 Ronald McDonald Houses in 16 countries, whose function is to provide comfort, care and "a home-away-from-home" for the families of seriously ill children who are receiving treatment at nearby hospitals. In addition to donating money to this worthwhile cause, many Alpha Delta Pi collegiate chapters and alumnae associations spend their time and energy volunteering at these houses. For more information concerning Ronald McDonald House Charities, please visit the RMHC Home Page at www.rmhc.com.
At the 2003 Grand Convention in Houston, TX, the Alpha Delta Pi Foundation announced its commitment to sponsor a Ronald McDonald Care Mobile. The Ronald McDonald Care Mobiles provide immunizations and health screenings, oral health services, diagnosis and treatment of chronic disease and health education to children who would otherwise go without health care. The Trustees chose to make a commitment to the Care Mobile affiliated with the UMASS Memorial Health Care in Worchester, MA with a pledge of $150,000 over three years to provide funds for the operations of the unit.
Information on this Care Mobile can be found at www.umassmed.edu/foundation/campaigns/chp.cfm.
Each Ronald McDonald Care Mobile houses two patient examination rooms including prenatal exam capabilities, a laboratory, and a reception and medical records area. Some vehicles include a hearing screen booth, while others offer a dental hygiene room - a unique service not typically available in other mobile health care programs. The staff of a Care Mobile may consist of a pediatrician, a pediatric nurse, a dentist, a dental hygienist and a program manager; other staff members may include a social worker and other pediatric specialists.
The Alpha Delta Pi Foundation is honored to be able to expand its philanthropic efforts to include the Care Mobile program. This program allows the Alpha Delta Pi Foundation to further fulfill its mission of seeking to improve the lives of women and the communities in which they live.
